    ..4bnoo/057cuv SA/KUT: 1932 Imperial Airways first Cape-London flight, Cape Town to Mbeya: Envelope "BY IMPERIAL AIRWAYS" franked 2d Roto & 4d Air clearly tied two strikes Cape Town cds 27 JAN. Front shows red manuscript "Unknown/ Return", boxed three line cachet "UNKNOWN/INCONNU/ONBEKEND" and Mbeya cds 8 FE. On reverse arrival cds Mbeya 6 FE, Daresslaam cds 24 FE, Cape Town cds 10 MAR and Cape Town Returned LO mark 14 MAR. This inaugural flight was marred by the accidents at Salisbury & Broken Hill (forcelanded in swamp). Envelope has perimeter water staining.     ..gsbsa/068cuv SA: 1951 SAA "PAARDEBERG" CRASH: Neat envelope, stamp floated off, Cape Town "Safe Driving Saves Lives" slogan cancel with cds 14 X 1951. Fine strike in blackish violet of the straight-line "SALVAGED CRASHED PLANE 15/10/51" cachet on front. A fine attractive example of this rare crash mail of which it is accepted that less than 20 or 30 examples survive. (KGVI) The SAA Dakota "Paardeberg" crashed into the 10500ft peak of Mount Ingeli near Kokstad whilst en route between Port Elizabeth and Durban. The crew and passengers all perished in what was the first SAA crash since 1937. ..gsbsa/068

Cover bears attractive German "flower" stamps. VF, scarce. Lufthansa 540 from Frankfurt to Johannesburg crashed on takeoff from Nairobi Embakasi airport on the morning of 20 November 1974. The flight crew of the Boeing 747 "Hessen" were Captain C Krack, First Officer HJ Shacke and Engineer R Hahn. There were 61 fatalities; the aircraft was completely destroyed by fire. Investigation determined that the cause of the crash was a stall at low altitude precipitated by pilot error in not extending the leading edge flaps for takeoff. This procedure is now automated on 747's in current service. Recovered mail (mainly destined for South Africa) was forwarded on after receiving the bilingual English/Afrikaans cachet. ...JSIE/051

Cover bears a pair of German 50pfg stamps tied by Wiesloch cds. Superb, scarce. On return journey to American addressee the cover ran into misfortune as per attached notelet mentioning "damaged by water during a storm encountered at sea by the SS Liberte which arrived at New York September 12 1950". This note from the Postmaster at New York. Shows no apparent signs of water damage, VF, interesting. (KGVI) ....ace/114
